Solving the Mexican Muller Mystery

Gallery
This page is used to compile all photographs of each figure, and include valuable information such as owner, restoration, reproduction, and sale information. Because my research is continuous, and more information may become available over time, this page will be a work-in-progress.

Please note that each figure is labelled with its pose followed by a number (ex: Stander #1), to make it easy to keep track of the different animals and make conversation easier. Over time, we may discover that some of the figures have names (given by the owner, museum, or by the carousel community), and they will be listed along with the number label.

Stander #1
Nickname(s): The Lead Horse, Blanket Horse, Drapery Horse, Dagmar (original name at Palisades Amusement Park)
Owner: Unknown
Condition: Restored
Year Restored: Unknown, circa 1990-1997
Restorer: John Hughes (wood), Lise Liepman (paint)
Previous Owner(s): Robert Ersepke
Reproduction(s): There are believed to be several reproductions, including ones that replicate the restored paint as well as those with different color schemes. There is also a bronze statue molded from this horse. It is believed that the Higareda brothers made copies before selling the original, as some of the reproductions are extremely accurate.
Additional Info:
-
The restored original was featured on the cover of The Carousel News & Trader, April 1997, Vol. 13, No. 4.
-
Stander #1 was originally auctioned in Lot #1, which also included Jumper #15 and Jumper #16. The asking price was $250,000.
-
A reproduction made in 1997 and painted by Lise Liepman is currently available for sale, the listing can be found by clicking here.

Bronze statues of Stander #1 and Stander #3, allegedly molded from the original horses, stand outside of the Richland Carrousel Park in Mansfield, Ohio. The statues were installed in 2003 and were donated anonymously.
-
This horse was offered as Lot 118 at Jim Aten's 1995 Antique Carousel Auction Extravaganza II in Irwindale, CA. It sold for $82,500 and was the top-selling figure of the auction.

Additional Info:
-
Stander #2 was originally auctioned in Lot #6, which included Jumper #28 and Jumper #25. The asking price was $105,000.
-
This horse was featured (along with Jumper #2) on the front cover over The Carousel News & Trader, Vol. 13, No. 2. In which there is an article by Steve Crescenze about the restoration.
-
The glass eyes found in the horse were actually too small, and were likely taken from one of the smaller, inner-row jumpers. Crescenze replaced these eyes with larger, more appropriately sized eyes during restoration. The smaller eyes were used to restored Jumper #2.
-
During restoration, Crescenze also identified at least one, potentially two layers of paint underneath the "original" paint that the horse was found with. There were also various repairs hidden under paint. This implies that this figure was previously restored before its discovery by the Higareda brothers.
